What If...

Here are five things we know:

  1. The Brewers back end of the rotation has been awful
  2. The San Diego Padres have also been awful
  3. The Brewers hate Tony Gwynn  Jr.
  4. San Diego LOVES anyone named Gwynn
  5. Mike Maddux has a brother that pitches in this league

Maybe, just maybe, the Brewers would be inclined to deal for Greg Maddux should they be in the thick of the division race around the trade deadline. Aside from the reasons above, Maddux has pitched well this year yet, and has show he still has enough in the tank. He'd be a great addition to a relatively young team, and would provide them with another pitcher who's been in pennant races and the post-season before.

San Diego isn't going anywhere, and they'd probably love to get something for Maddux.

Gwynn Jr. seems to have no future in Milwaukee. They signed Mike Cameron rather than give him the CF job, and they're grooming LaPorta to take Hart's spot in right when Hart takes Cameron's spot in center after this season. Why they don't think Gwynn has a future with this team is beyond me, but that's neither here nor there. The Padres will be selling all assests at the deadline, and how big of a PR shot in the arm would that be to add Tony Gwynn's son?

Maddux does have a no trade clause, but I'm assuming he'd waive it for the following teams:

  1. Los Angeles (Maddux likes the west coast and still has a home in Vegas)
  2. Arizona (Same reasons as above)
  3. Chicago (he's pitched for the Cubs on more than one ocassion)
  4. Atlanta (his old buddies Smoltz and Glavine are still kicking around there)
  5. Milwaukee (Brother connection)
The Brewers did make a small effort to acquire Maddux when he was dealt from the Cubs to Dodgers in 06.  I personally think Gwynn would be a bit much to give up for a half season of Maddux, but who knows.  As it stands I think Gwynn Jr. will have a new home by August 1, and you can't tell me the Padres wouldn't love to have him.

Let the speculation begin.
