Pack Your Bags Laynce

How is this man still on the team? Seriously, what did Tony Gwynn Jr. do to Ned or Doug? Run over their dog? Sleep with one of their wives? This guy gets the call up and starts against the San Diego Padres over TGJ?

Laynce Nix is like a mix of Bill Hall, Mike Cameron, Dick Weeks and Gabe Gross, all rolled into one. To you and I, aka the knowledgeable fan, that sounds pretty shitty. To Ned Yost, that sounds like "The Prototype."

God help us.

What did Gwynn do? Let's start with what he didn't do. He has one extra base hit in over 340 plate appearances. ONE.

In 253 big league plate appearances, he has an OPS+ of 58.

He's hitting .265/.316/.311 in AAA, for an OPS of .628.

If his last name wasn't Gwynn, he'd just be another stalled prospect no one talked about.

Correction: 11 extra base hits. I got some bad info the first time. Still, not nearly enough.

Why would you pull out the extra base hits stat? As long as he doesn't strike out and has a solid glove that's great! Layne Nix is a waste of an at bat, if Gwynn can put his bat on the ball and move runners over as well as giving them some more speed then he's the best call up.

An OPS of .628 in AAA is awful. If putting the bat on the ball and speed are the only requirements of getting called up they might as well bring up Mel Stocker who is a better base stealer and rarely strikes out.

If Gywnn isn't going to hit for power-- fine, but he needs to at least get on base, something he hasn't shown he can do.

Ooh! Ooh! Can I play? Tony Gwynn Jr. is like a mix of Juan Pierre, Craig Counsell, Luis Rivas, and Nook Logan, all rolled into one!

Yeah, let's play that guy. Speed's great, but if you can't get on base to use it, you might as well be Herb Washington.

Nix offers a capable glove and at least offers the possibility of LH power off the bench, like the guy he replaced on the roster.

Wow, I never knew so many people were either so pro or anti TGJR. It's impressive actually.

I'll admit that I thought he boasted a much higher OBP. I hate Nix though. I wanted to see Brad Nelson finally get a shake in Brew Town.
