After running into two outs on the base paths last night in the heart breaking loss to the lame New York team, we once again reached out to our friends at STATS to figure out just how bad the Brewers are on the basepaths. As you can see below, they are tied for the second most "basepath outs" in the National League with the Colorado Rockies.
Excluding things like caught stealing and pickoffs, the Brewers have totaled 43 “basepath outs” (30 out advancing, 10 line double plays, 3 fly double plays).
Rays 49
Orioles 47
Angels 46
Yankees 45
Royals 44
Rangers 44
Cardinals 44
Rockies 43
Brewers 43
Red Sox 42

Bill James keeps a stat of Team Base Running Analysis. He explains it thusly:
"The entire team’s overall contribution on the bases; their basestealing, avoidance of the double play, and success at taking the extra base while avoiding being thrown out.
For a summary of each team, look at the far right column called "Net Gain". Zero is average. Plus numbers are above average and negative numbers are below average."
As of today, the Brewers rank 7th in the Majors in Net Gain on the season with a +55. Colorado and Philly rank first with +95, and the Mets and Marlins are also up there. The net gain is fairly even, with stolen bases accounting for a little more than half. I think that analysis lines up fairly well with what I see everyday.
