Brewers Let CC Walk

HA, Got you didn't I? I win again!

No, not that CC, Craig Counsell. The Brewers announced they've declined to pick up Counsell's $3.4 million option for next year. Not all that big of a shock. Counsell is a nice player to have around, but you don't want that much money tied into a utility guy. But JG, wasn't Counsell our defacto starting third baseman last year? Sure, but Counsell is no starter in this league.

Counsell does a lot of things nice, but nothing great. You don't overpay for those guys. I wouldn't be shocked if they offered Counsell a smaller deal to return, but I also wouldn't be shocked if he ended up in Arizona again as a utility man for them. He'll play somewhere next year, guys like him are always in high demand.

You could look at this as a sign of them trimming some coin to keep CC. I wouldn't put too much stock in that thought, but it is a thought.

In other news, the Oakland A's have claimed Joe Dillon off waivers. The Brewers removed him from their 40 man to make room for Casey McGhee, who they just claimed from the Cubs.

So much for Joe Dillon starting at third for the Crew next year (dorks).

The Brewers still hold options on Mike Cameron and Salomon Torres. It sounds like everyone expects them to pick up Torre's option after the excellent job he did last year, but I wouldn't be totally shocked if they declined that. It wouldn't be a total shock if Torres declined next year given his age and number of innings he's piled up. I guess I'm all for picking up the option so long as they actively seek a closer and slide Torres back into the setup role.

Cameron on the other hand is a coin flip to me. I wouldn't be shocked either way. Although there are reports of him and CC allegedly being a packaged deal, if they somehow manage to re-sign CC, I don't see them picking up Cammy's option.

It shall be interesting to see how things unfold these next few weeks...
