Justin-I am kind of glad you know a lot about this guy because as I was driving around yesterday and news broke of this, I heard some things about Lute that I wasn't aware of. I'd like to hear your side of it.
The guys on ESPN radio, I think it was Scott Van Pelt, he was criticizing Olson for basically letting Kevin O'Neill have the program for a year until he could come back. And when Lute retired, it would be his again. Well, this year, Lute came back and got ride of O'Neill. And now he's gone a week after Midnight Madness?
Please shed some light on this, as I really am not sure if all this is true or not, and I'm kind of interested to hear what went down.
JG is not stable right now. He's lighting candles around photos of Miles Simon, Mike Bibby, Khalid Reeves, Salim Stoudamire and trying to figure out how the 2001 team blue a 20 point lead to Mike Dunleavey.
No it is pretty odd. He took a leave last year to deal with a very public divorce and handed the reigns to that turd O'Neill. He then returned later in the season and pretty much told O'Neill to hit the bricks. O'Neill was dismissed from the staff in the offseason because Lute said he was re-energized and ready to go.
Now all of a sudden he leaves suddenly. The AD isn't exactly pleased about this, they thought O'Neill was going to take over for him in a year or two whenever Lute was ready to step down. I do know Lute didn't like the style that O'Neill employed and didn't think the two would mesh after he returned, so that's why he was let go.
It's an indefensible move to quit on your team this close to the season, and send your replacement packing because you coach two different styles and you said you'd be roaming the sidelines this season. I know Lute has had a rough go-at-it this past decade with his wife dying of cancer, and then going through this divorce last year, but I get the feeling he was leaning towards stepping down in the offseason, a lot sooner, and should have done it then.
The program is going to be in a big transition now, as he's let a lot of guys from his staff leave through the years. Say what you will about his coaching, but the man could flat out recruit, and really seemed to somehow connect with kids 50 years younger than he was.
I will certainly miss him.
The 2002 team was outmatched and got that far largely off emotion, played for their coach who just lost his wife. Mike Dunleavey played out of his mind, and Loren Woods was no match for Duke's big guys.

Classy.
Oh and suddenly you're a prophet? Your hero Lute didn't die, you realize that right? It's more funny than it is classy.
