KGB's Reign Over

Funny, I thought this happened in 1995. The Packers announced today that they have released Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila. The release of 'KGB' makes room for defensive tack Justin Harrell, who was on the PUP list.

In his nine seasons in Green Bay, 'KGB' leaves as the teams all-time sack leader with 74.5. At one time, he was one of the top five pass rushers in the game, but with the past few seasons came a sharp decline in 'KGB's' game, relegating him to a third down pass-rushing role only.

Entering the league out of San Diego State, 'KGB' was viewed as a tweener, without a real position. He lacked coverage skills to play linebacker, and lacked bulk to be a solid everydown lineman. He got by on quickness off the edge, and was able to constantly beat tackles with his speed. Eventually the book was out on 'KGB', widen your stance and keep pushing him to the outside, or get your hands on him early and knock him down.

The move to cut Kabeer in favor of Harrell isn't that big of a deal, and doesn't really affect the team's depth. They need more help at tackle than they do end. Along with that, Kabeer was giving them nothing anyway, so even if Harrell sucks his production will likely still be equal to that of what they were getting out of 'KGB'.

In his prime, he was great, recently he was Jamal Reynolds. So long Kabeer. You were as nice a man I ever spoke to and had one of the best nicknames on the team (even if it was just a lazy, give him a nickname based on his initials, nickname).
